The Red Swordtail Platy is a perennial favorite for both beginner and seasoned aquarists. Known for its striking crimson color and the iconic “sword” extension on the males’ tails, these livebearers bring instant movement and a bold pop of color to any freshwater community tank.
Key Features & Appearance
Intense Coloration: A solid, velvety red body that stands out beautifully against green aquatic plants.
The “Sword”: Males develop a long, pointed extension on the lower part of their caudal fin.
Active Swimmers: These fish are energetic and occupy the middle to upper layers of the aquarium.
Peaceful Nature: They are generally social and thrive in community setups with other non-aggressive species.
Care & Tank Requirements
To keep your Red Swordtails healthy and vibrant, aim for a well-maintained environment:
Minimum Tank Size: 75 Liters (20 Gallons) to provide enough swimming space.
Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C.
pH Levels: 7.0 – 8.4 (They prefer slightly alkaline, harder water).
Diet: Omnivorous. They thrive on high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional treats of frozen or live brine shrimp and bloodworms. They also enjoy grazing on algae.
Aquascape: They appreciate a mix of open swimming space and densely planted areas (using plants like Java Fern, Anubias, or Vallisneria) to feel secure.
