Here’s a guide to Red Crystal Shrimp—one of the most stunning and rewarding freshwater shrimp to keep. Since you’re in UnitedArabEmirates, where water can be naturally hard and alkaline, I’ll also highlight what to watch out for so you can keep them thriving.

🟥 Red Crystal Shrimp
(Caridina cantonensis – Crystal Red Shrimp / CRS)

🌟 Description
Red Crystal Shrimp are selectively bred variants of the Bee Shrimp, known for their vivid red-and-white banded patterns. They’re small (around 2.5–3 cm), peaceful, and highly prized in the aquascaping world.

Key Traits
– Color: Red and white patterns, graded from low (C) to high (SSS) quality
– Size: 2.5–3 cm
– Lifespan: 1.5–2 years
– Temperament: Peaceful, shy, active grazers
– Difficulty: Moderate to high (sensitive to water parameters)

—

🧪 Ideal Water Parameters
Red Crystal Shrimp are Caridina, which means they prefer soft, acidic water.

| Parameter | Ideal Range |
|———-|————-|
| Temperature | 20–24°C |
| pH | 5.8–6.8 |
| GH | 4–6 |
| KH | 0–2 |
| TDS | 100–160 ppm |

Important: Dubai tap water is usually hard and alkaline, so most keepers use RO (reverse osmosis) water remineralized with a Caridina-specific mineral mix.

🏡 Tank Setup Tips

Tank Size
– Minimum 20 liters, but 30–40 liters is more stable for sensitive shrimp.

Substrate
– Use active soil (e.g., ADA Amazonia, Brightwell, SL-Aqua) to buffer pH downward.

Filtration
– Sponge filter or gentle canister filter
– Avoid strong flow
– Ensure excellent biological filtration

Plants & Hardscape
– Mosses (Java, Christmas, Flame)
– Fine-leaf plants
– Cholla wood, almond leaves, and biofilm-friendly surfaces

Lighting
– Moderate; shrimp don’t need strong light, but plants do.

—

🍽 Feeding
Red Crystal Shrimp graze constantly on biofilm, but you can supplement with:

– Shrimp-specific pellets
– Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)
– Snowflake food
– Bacter powders for biofilm growth

Feed lightly—overfeeding is the #1 cause of shrimp deaths.

🧼 Maintenance & Care Tips

Stability is everything
Caridina shrimp die more from parameter swings than from imperfect parameters.

Weekly Routine
– 10–15% water change with remineralized RO water
– Clean filter sponges gently in tank water
– Remove uneaten food after 2–3 hours

Avoid
– Copper-based medications
– Sudden temperature changes
– Overcleaning the tank
– Mixing with aggressive fish

—

🐣 Breeding
Red Crystal Shrimp breed readily when conditions are stable.

Requirements
– Mature tank (2–3 months minimum)
– Stable soft water
– Plenty of hiding spots

Females carry eggs for 28–35 days, and babies are tiny but fully formed.

💡 Pro Tips for Success
– Start with 10–20 shrimp to build a stable colony.
– Use drip acclimation when introducing them.
– Add leaf litter to boost biofilm and tannins.
– Keep them in a species-only tank for best survival rates.
– Test water weekly—especially TDS and pH.
